The photos were taken by Maurice M Gates, probably at Tollerton summer 1958. Thanks to John Mead, John Davis, John Smith and Phil Butler for contributions to this story. Lincolns RE376, RF417 and RF458 were ferried from Langar to Tollerton with landing gear locked down, having been chosen in preference to RE313, RE361, RE369, RE370, RF364, RF370, RF394, RF400, RF404, RF427, RF473, RF480, RF483, RF495, RF501, RF519, RF520. The three aircraft were allocated ZP-CBR, ZP-CBQ, ZP-CBS. ZP-CBR was converted in 1957 to Lincoln Freighter, as Fields called it. The Avro 695 Lincolnian had simple Lancastrian-style nose and tail fairings and an 'add-on' under-fuselage pannier, example G-ALPF. Field's Lincoln Freighter had a different faired rear fuselage plus a permanent extension to the underside of the fuselage from nose almost to tailplane, to accommodate a cargo of beef carcasses. ZP-CBR was seen at Tollerton in Nov/Dec 1957, May/July/Oct/Dec 1958, Mar 1959, wearing the number '97' below the registration without a dash. RF417 was in a bluish undercoat, devoid of all markings and was not converted. RF458 retained its RAF scheme and was not converted. It is believed that ZP-CBR was never flown after conversion. The contract fell through in Sep 1959 and all three were scrapped for £2900. If you have any comments, please reply direct to Peter Wd, or via the feedback link below.
